In 2014, we were tasked with creating an interactive map based on existing artwork by Abby Clark (Carr) for the East Arkansas Crossroads Coalition.

At first, our client suggested that we use Flash to create the map. We convinced them that we needed to provide a mobile-friendly solution instead, since mobile browser use was becoming increasingly common. We eventually decided to use HTML5 canvas as our medium.

At the time, HTML5 canvas was still pretty new and didn't have the capabilities we needed out-of-the-box. So we implemented a solution using a game engine (KineticJS) to handle the layering and interactivity we needed.

Using the vector drawing provided to us from our client, we exported it to SVG format and used the SVG code to draw the art to the canvas. Using KineticJS, we were able to layer everything correctly and make it interactive.
As of February 2018, our interactive map is still in use on the East Arkansas Crossroads Coalition website. You can view it in all its glory on their main page. http://www.crossroadscoalition.org/
