Pilgrimage at Mount Cristo Rey

Mount Cristo Rey

On the last Sunday of October thousands of pilgrims hike to the top of Mount Cristo Rey to honor the celebration of the Feast of Christ the King. Located in Sunland Park, New Mexico the site straddles the international border with Mexico. Texas is a short drive away. The border itself cuts across the steep southern slope where the temporary wall can be seen from a far distance.  Despite the political climate, the faithful travel from both states and nearby Juarez, hiking the 4.4 mile trip to offer up their pain and suffering for gratitude. The occasion brings joy and community. After the long trip music and dance greets them as they make it to the top of the mountain.
