Hypothetical GE SmartFridge Application

I. concept -
design the interface for a mobile application to pair with a GE Smart Fridge.
II. user tasks -

1. Monitor and adjust temperatures of fridge & freezer*
2. View live video of fridge interior
3. View, modify & create shopping lists*
4. Write custom note to appear on Smart Fridge screen*
5. View list of expiry reminders*
6. Manage music playback*
* = function already present on Smart Fridge's native interface
III. design decisions -

Because the list of user tasks is so varied, and many of the tasks require several functions within each, I opted to for a list-item style index page.

The UI is largely flat with block colors, as I felt this suited GE's modern style.

Button clickability (beyond the index page) is indicated by an opaque GE blue.

I opted to have a banner instead of a lower navigation menu, largely for aesthetic reasons, though I concede that having a home and back button at the bottom are certainly more efficient and more practical for users.

On top of the basic user tasks outlined above, I expanded on a feature which would allow users to order from Amazon Pantry to restock a fridge from an existing grocery list. This assumes, on the technical side, that grocery list items would be smart objects and could have connection to a purchasable, online version of the desired food item.
IV. designs -
This is the main interface of the app. Most functions outlined in the user requirements were relatively distinct, so the only functions combined in the main interface are in “monitor inventory” (includes the “live view” feature as well as a list of upcoming expiry dates).
“Restock groceries” is a feature I implemented, allowing users to draw from grocery lists (or manually enter items) to order food to their doorstep.
In the Adjust Temperature interface, the only clickable features are in blue. Users can iterate between freezer and refrigerator with the arrows below the banner. The “ ? “ button provides information about optimal fridge and freezer temperatures. After leaving the index page, a hamburger (upper right) and back arrow (upper left) appear to enable navigation between pages.
The Restock Groceries interface allows users to manually enter an item to order online, or import items from an existing grocery list. The interface displays this list of items, the total cost, and allows users to manipulate the quantity of each item before ordering from Amazon Pantry. A feature I’d like to add to this would be “repeat order” which would execute an order identical to that of an old grocery list.
Manage Lists allows users to create, customize, organize, and delete grocery lists which exist on the Smart Fridge’s database. To delete a list, users slide the panel containing a list to the left (this is why they do not have a delete button – this style of list-item deletion  is common on recent iOS interfaces). In theory, each list would be populated with items inventoried by Amazon Pantry.
The interface for Set Reminders enables users to send a notification to the Smart Fridge screen back home. Because these notifications would typically be short reminders, emphasis was placed on editing and time of reminder over actually displaying the note itself.
Monitor Inventory allows users to view the inside of their Smart Fridge, perhaps to check if a specific item is present as they go shopping, or maybe to prevent an unrewarded trip from the sofa. It also displays upcoming expiration dates of foods stored from completed grocery lists and orders fulfilled through Amazon.
