Box Card: Violent Waltz
Box Card: Violent Waltz
Jul. 2016
Birthday card for a family friend.
He had created his own fanmade characters in the Jojo’s Bizarre Adventure universe, and I used his sketches as a basis for styling them more like the original’s graphic style. Along with the two Stand characters, I designed him as a character in the proper style as well.
I measured how large the figures could be and sketched out how I wanted the composition to look as viewed by the front. I sketched, inked, and watercolored the three figures and the largest figure’s hand individually, making sure to ink them with heavy outlines. Next, I manually cut out the figures with an X-acto knife.
The whole card’s base was made by folding an 8.5” x 11” piece of white cardstock in half, gluing the proper colors to each interior and exterior, cutting the 2” panels, scoring the inside of three of the panels (keeping one intact for the “back” of the card), and then gluing the hand cut tabs to assemble the 4” wide card. When assembled correctly, the folded card should only be sealed on the bottom box, which stays intact when the card is folded out.
There are two strips of paper within the box base which create the two midgrounds to give the characters depth between one another. The small figure is attached to the foreground, the finger gun is attached to midground 1, the human figure is attached to  midground 2, and the large figure is in the background attached to the back panel that wasn’t scored. The Happy Birthday cards (which, in hindsight, were horridly planned out) and the other decorative cutouts were glued on last.

The card itself is a Box Card, which opens up to add dimension to the placed figures inside of a layer system within the card’s box base. Some elements had to be supported with clear strips of plastic.
Happily Be!
