Berkeley Innovation (BI), an undergraduate human-centered design club at UC Berkeley, partnered up with the UC Berkeley Educational Technology Services department to create a new student website that consolidates all current campus online experiences (scheduling, financial services, career development, etc.). Four BI students, including myself, worked with 2 campus designers to improve the dashboard design that UCB ETS had already created.

Together, we conducted usability tests and user interviews to generate feedback regarding the existing dashboard design. In addition, we were able to further gauge user needs and from the data we collected we learned how to create user personas and scenarios from the ETS designers.

BI student designers were then given the opportunity to design a completely new dashboard. We identified personal user needs as students and completed comparative analyses of common website user interfaces to create our own iteration of a dashboard landing page.

We determined that the original dashboard lacks dominance and requires extra effort to navigate through the structure of the dashboard. As students, we wanted a visual representation of what classes, student groups, and etc. are generating the most notifications or data. In addition, we wanted a consolidated list of time-pertinent tasks and assignments, as well as a means of accessing the multiple sites classes are hosted on.

The dashboard features a live feed notification bar and live syllabi that includes click through links for lecture videos, summaries, assignments, and other relevant course materials updated daily.

A beta version of the website will go live January 2013 for UC Berkeley students!
