Home, Territory and Identity

Visual Communication Project for the final semester in the last year of college, the goal was to envision an event that dealt with problems related to the human rights and design the communication platform for the event. An institutional partnership was established with Amnesty International for the realization of this project.
The theme of the project 'Lar, Território e Identidade' (which literally translates into 'Home, Territory and Identity') is related to focal points such as the ubiquity of the home in modern times, and is unquestionably linked to the eradication of poverty and especially homelessness. This campaign presents us the concepts of home, territory and identity from two different points of view: the sheltered people and the homeless people. In a certain way, it is an invitation to reflexion about the value we give to the spaces we claim as our own personal territories, in the light of the modern tendency of constant migration and consequent disconnection and abandon of cultural traditions. It is also an appeal to consciousness and involvement in eradicating extreme poverty and homelessness, particularly in Portugal.

This project first started with a photographic exploration, conveyed by myself. I photographed the bedrooms of
16 people as a way of exploring how one connects with space and lives in it.
In parallel, a thorough research of the concepts of home, territory and identity was made, through the fields of psychology, anthropology and sociology.

The event 'envisioned' for the final result of the project was a conference that brought together psychologists, anthropologists, sociologists and also Amnesty International, to discuss the matters of territory and identity.
This conference would culminate with the opening of the photography exhibition also named
"Home, Territory and Identity".

Finally, the graphic objects of this communication platform were three A2 posters, the conference program and ticket and the photography exhibition catalogue. The exhibition and catalogue feature only the 'bed' series, 16 photographs, but the photographic exploration went much further. The photographs were all taken with a Canon AE-1 Program using Iflord Delta 3200 Professional black&white film, so they have a lovely grain and contrast. I invite you to see all the photographs taken in my flickr photostream.
