Used Hoods Become
Winter Homes for Cats

-

Over the last decade in South Korea,
the number of cats kept as pets has significantly increased.

At the same time the number of stray cats has also increased,
but due to a lack of public awareness regarding animal homelessness,
there is very little public support to help these animals.

The aim of this project is to raise awareness,
and promote positive interaction between people and homeless animals.

The target audience includes existing pet owners/animal lovers,
as well as the general public.

Eagerly searching for warm shelter in winter,
stray cats damage property, get hurt,
and are even at times abused by people.

As South Korea doesn’t have many support programs
for stray cats, the idea was to create,
in collaboration with Molly’s Petshop, a national petshop chain,
an ecofriendly, up cycling solution to raise awareness

and provide 2,000+ shelters by collecting padded clothing donations
from the public and local Goodwill stores,
and then upcycling them into portable cat shelters.

Inspired by the hooded shape of igloos,
the design uses a dome shape, which is light,
portable,easy to assemble,
and resistant to rain, wind, and snow,
and each shelter includes bowls for food and water.

The shelters were given away for free
at all Molly’s Petshop locations to customers
who voluntarily bought food for stray cats
during a two week period in December, 2017.

The campaign received large amounts of
positive feedback across social media,
news outlets, magazines, and TV programs.
