Handle With Care, 2011

The project deals with the idiosyncrasies that manifest in an insecure person’s life. By understanding how insecurity operates in physical and psychological spaces, and drawing parallels between different cultures, economies and societies, we created three personas that help us recognize and laugh at our own insecurities.
All the umbrellas employ different technologies, materials, tones and metaphors.

The Control Freak
One umbrella is loosely modeled on industries and lobbies that spend endless resources on security devices, which ironically lead to insecurity. This persona is a control freak who makes himself an umbrella with a tap on top. He can now open his umbrella & make it rain whenever he wishes to, and be protected.

The Nervous Wreck
Since lack of physical security can lead to fear and insecurity, this persona has been given an umbrella that has rear view mirrors attached to it. She can now walk safely on the streets and be able to look out for any suspicious activity or behaviour and feel safer.

The Blindy Faithful
This umbrella comments on our traditional ways of tackling insecurity, which gives preference to aesthetics and prayer over functionality.
A lot of our traditional practices, such as Karva Chauth or Sindoor, require a woman to perform a ritual for her husband’s long life. This dependence is adapted to our final umbrella.
The umbrella floats on our persona’s head but it lights up to put him in the spot light only if the woman holds the umbrella handle upright.
