Originally, when we started this project, we were asked to collaborate with a Yale graduate student about China’s punk rock music scene. Specifically, we sought to explore how Western culture influences the East. After back-and-forth communication, our contact became frustrated with our interpretation of his research, and sent us a strongly worded 6-paragraph rant about our supposed incomplete understanding of censorship in modern-day China with attached hyperlinks for further learning. After this surprising reaction, we decided to pivot and explore the idea of miscommunication between cultures around touchy subjects. Thus, we have created many patterns of said quotes from the email to symbolize our experience with breaching cultural borders. We chose to make a white-on-black denim rock jacket as a simple base upon which we plastered variations of these bold word choices.
