I participated in creating two effects and both went through alot of iterations and give and take.

The first one was the bridge fracturing scene which was created in Houdini, the only tricky part here was to make the chunks rotate in the direction of the arc so I had to manually draw a line inside and use product of the tangent vector and the chunk face normal vector as a rotation axis.

And as you can see here the went through 11 stages of development.

The second effect was the under water shot which has several elements (water environment, school of fish). 

I will start with the fish which were created using Cebas Thinking Particles inside of 3ds max, you can find a rough idea of the creation process in this tutorial I mainly used the Flow operator in TP, and from there I went on and developed it more to obtain the final look. Here is a prev from the first stages of development.

For the water surface I used Houdini Ocean plug in for 3ds max to create those nice waves. Later I used particle flow to add some rising underwater dust which really moved the reality of this shot to a higher level (always pay attention to details), and here how it looks before being added to the sequence.
