Arts and Crafts Movement

THE ARTS AND CRAFTS MOVEMENT
The Arts and Crafts Movement was considered to be one of the most influential Modern Art Movements of its' time. This movement was inspired by the negative aesthetic consequences of the Industrial Revolution, and therefore responded with an enthusiasm towards preserving individual craftsmanship and design. The focal aim being to recreate manual craftsmanship in the era of mass production. (Dempsey, 2007)
The strong ideas (derived from John Ruskin) portrayed by Morris nurtured the immense impact of numerous designers, practitioners and manufactures of Victorian Art. (Henderson, 2018) Which eventually led to the construction of organisations that encouraged the Arts and Crafts. The primary concern of the movement was; architecture and the decorative arts. This included; wallpaper, textiles, wood cravings, ceramics, and many more. (Dempsey, 2007)

'Pimpernel' is an artwork by William Morris. This design is a perfect representation of his desire to conserve the style of the Middle Ages. Furthermore, Morris believed that decoration in it's simplest form should induce pleasure to those who use it as well as those who create it. (Henderson, 2018) Through the usage of floral elements, the concept of nature comes to light. Which had intentions of 'attacking' the industrialised age. The philosophy behind the Arts and Crafts Movement involved many individuals believing that the Industrial Revolution made man less creative, seeing as his unique influence was being removed during the manufacturing process. (Ryan, 2007)
