Design contest entry for a new name and overall identity for an historic Italian bike race (with an almost 75-year history). The race starts and ends in Rome, in the Lazio/Latium region. Shicon.com represents the client, RCS Sport, the same company that puts on the Giro d’Italia (Tour of Italy). I chose to keep Lazio as a main component of the name, mainly due to the geographic region and its ties to the race’s history. Trofeo Lazio Bike Race Naming and Identity

Objectives: A global design contest entry for a new name and overall identity for an historic Italian bike race (75 yrs). The brand needed to capture the essence and history of Rome (the main city of the region) – and bike racing – but in a contemporary way. Since the race starts and ends in Rome, in the Lazio/Latium region, I chose to keep Lazio as a main component of the name, mainly due to the geographic region and its ties to the race’s history. Trofeo (Italian for “trophy”) works well as it’s short and rhymes with Lazio. The end result is a strong, phonetic name that rolls off the tongue nicely. The logo combines regional architecture with cycling – where the wheels of the bike become the volutes of an ionic Roman column. The race winner’s prize is a unique trophy (crafted from stone and iron).

My role: concept, naming, design, illustration and identity (logo, color palette, typography, supporting assets).
