I tried using the Gradient Mesh tool in Adobe Illustrator. It's like applying colors on a 3D object via applying color though its vertices or points (or whatever you call it).
It's similar to how I color illustrations digitally. The stars has a 3D look into it. I'm happy with the results so far.
