social values project
mental illness was the topic that i picked, and the value that accompanies it (rather loosely) is ‘empathy’. i would say that mental illness has been an old friend in my life, like the one you don’t really like but you gotta deal with. its also like a ghost that haunts many of my friends as well. what better thing to do a project about, right? when it comes to empathy towards mental illness, something that really caught my attention was how people were really ignorant about the truth. i’ve had friends who said things like “you’re so sad all the time why can’t you just cheer up or something??”. that would be considered mild in the string of things people say about (or to) mental illness sufferers. with that as the focus, thats how the project developed along the months. it’s been a really strange journey doing a project so personal, but with the freedom of this project i have learned a lot as well.
