Problem:
My task was to design a promotional poster for the Greenlake Milk Carton Derby. This is an annual event in Seattle where kids, adults, businesses, and families get to build their own boats/watercraft out of milk cartons. Participants then arrive in Greenlake with their milk carton boats and compete against each other in a race to the finish line.
Solution:
When I first learned of this event and studied photographs of previous contenders, the words that came to mind were "whimsical" and "challenging adventure". I envisioned participants being playful and imaginative, playing various pretend roles, such as pretending they're sailors, pirates, or explorers on a mission and riding the waves with their unorthodox milk carton boats. I wanted to emulate this feeling, so I designed an image of a daring character on a milk carton boat, paddling across these colossal waves in a quest to race across the sea.
