In 2017, I did a year of exchange in China and was lucky to do lots of interstate travel. As an Australian-born Chinese, it was surreal going back to my motherland and unlearning stereotypes the world has imposed on me about China and to experience it for myself. I wanted to set myself a project so I went off travelling around with my T2.

This visual essay explores the multiplicity of cultures within the country - geographically and anthropologically, one region is so vastly different to another yet so little people know about it. Our knowledge about China as outsiders, particularly in the West, is  trite so I hope this may subvert any monolithic and generalised perceptions of China you may have. It is a country which has revealed its livelihood, its cultural patina and its warmth to me during my year there.

I have split this project into two variables - one is a small selection of prints with an small booklet detailing the story above and insights. The other is a digital book that includes over 100 pages of photography sorted geographically - Hangzhou, Wuzhen, Shanghai, Guilin, Sanya (Hainan), Hohhot (Inner Mongolia) and Guangzhou.
