The crispness of fall is in the air and soon the leaves will be turning their marvelous golden colors. The best way to start enjoying the fall foliage is to take a bike ride on some of the country’s most beautiful trails. Whether you’re looking for an easy ride or something more challenging, there are many great places to explore on two wheels.

Shenandoah Valley (Virginia)

A spacious rural landscape among quaint towns and historic landmarks provides the perfect backdrop to a fall bike ride in Virginia. The valley has national recognition as one of the best destinations for bicycle tours. Scenic loops are well-maintained and clearly mapped out. With both on and off-road trails, there is a trail for every level of cyclist in the Shenandoah Valley.

Elk Mountain Scenic Highway (North Carolina)

If you’re looking for a real adventure, take on the Elk Mountain Scenic Highway in Asheville, North Carolina. This is a challenging uphill climb best for those expert cyclists who want to get their heart pumping. The jaw-dropping beauty of the landscape will be worth the intense cardio workout.

Kebler Pass (Colorado)

For a dramatic mountain view of the autumn season, gear up and take a bike trek up Kebler Pass. Although it’s all uphill, it’s a gradual climb up the mountain. Most of the trail is paved with a solid dirt road about halfway up the summit. The valleys have different peak foliage times. You’ll get to experience a different splash of colors in everyone.

Carriage Trails (Maine)

Experience the melting hues of fall colors in Maine’s Arcadia National Park all from the comfort of your bike seat. The Carriage Trails are car-free so you don’t have to worry about moving aside and can just enjoy the beauty surrounding you. It’s a 45 mile stretch of packed gravel road trails that take you past the park’s most beautiful waterfalls, coastal views, and stone bridges.

Katy Trail (Missouri)

This mainly level trail is perfect for beginner cyclists looking for an easy long ride. Riding mostly along the Missouri River, you’ll get to experience fall as it’s reflected in the rushing waters. There are even spots along the trail where you can hitch up your bike and stop into a local winery for a tasting and some delicious local grub.
