I was asked by my client to sketch or paint this image as a Christmas gift for his wife, of their granddaughter Skyler and their cat Uc (pronounced 'ootch'). It was one of the photos that captures a sweet moment, but comes out dark and has other distractions going on in the background. I decided to paint it in watercolour using a loose style of illustration, not unlike those you'd find in a children's book.
The story of Uc is so heartwarming, he was a stray, three-legged cat in Turkey who befriended my client and his wife on their holiday. They welcomed him into their villa as the gardener was none too fond of him, and would always shoo him away. When their holiday was ending they knew they didn't have the heart to leave him behind, so they made many arrangements and jumped through lots of hoops, to take little Uc back to the UK with them. He's been with them several years now, and is an old boy, so this picture carries a lot of love and meaning.
