BattleBoxBD I Brand Design

Using the mouth as an instrument, beatboxers craft unique sounds defying conventional music techniques. The display of fast paced phonetics and juxtaposed with rhythm is eargasmic and leaves anyone watching in awe of the sheer talent that these passionate artists have to offer. Beatboxing is not only a musical art form, it’s a movement, and this same movement has only recently manifested in the small nation of Bangladesh. BeatBoxBangladesh, the pioneering beatbox community in the country, housed the first official beatbox battle championship, Battle Box BD 2017.

Beatboxing is all about spontaneity, improvisation and youthful vibrant energy. Keeping that in mind, when we were tasked with creating the Brand Expression, Visual Identity and communication material for this event, we tried to capture & visualise the spontaneous free flow of beats improvised during beatbox battles; An iconic visual language that is cryptic yet reminiscent of street art culture, making it appeal to the youth.

To create the identity for this groundbreaking event we were Inspired by the passionate community, which comprises of young individuals who eat, sleep, and hone beatboxing. We created 16 symbols representing the ethos of the beatbox battle and the beatbox community. we developed a visual language based around these symbols which represent the core elements at the heart and soul of beatboxing, aptly named, ‘SPITS’. To visualize the head to head to collisions, a generative software was created called ‘The COLLIDER’ which uses sounds from the battles to create unique visual compositions through the ‘SPITS’ from two opposing heads made to face each other in battle, showing two unique sides to each battle. Black and Light Grey were used to distinguish the opposing sides of a beatbox battle. All the visual communication utilized these symbols and graphic elements to form one coherent, iconic & dynamic identity.

An underground movement was brought to the spotlight through the communication materials around the country both online and offline, receiving mainstream coverage and massive shoutouts from renowned beatboxers around the globe. The event helped to create a greater following for Beatbox Bangladesh attracting many new youngsters, paving the way for future generations of beatboxers to flourish.
