TRANSFORMING DRAPES

TRANSFORMING DRAPES
This project involved a two-fold process: investigating needs of the “future home” and then creating design interventions for the future lifestyles.

Designing for the ever-increasing “need for change” mentality, I proposed full-length curtains, printed with photo-chromic pigments as a futuristic solution. The collection of print-designs was inspired from the four elements of nature and were translated as glyphic symbols into geometric patterns.
The idea was that the curtains would appear patterned only when exposed to sunlight. Thus, in a day, from sunrise to sunset different parts of the curtains in different rooms of the house would have patterns magically appear when lit by the sun!

The key takeaway was a thorough understanding of well-laid out design process including  ideation and planning as well as the importance of a methodical iterative approach to achieve the final proposal.

After researching about development in smart textiles I stumbled upon  different colourants that react to stimulus. I researched more about where photo-chromic colourants are used and what difficulties we face today with its application.

In today's world, nature is barely a part of our everyday living. In an attempt to bridge this gap in the coming years the prints that I have developed take inspiration from these basic four elements that our home started building from.My main intention was to create an environment in the future that still reminds us from where we've come; to remind ourselves of a simple living in the complicated future we are about to step in.

These prints are a collection inspired from the blazing fire, reflective water, humble earth and guileless air. These elements are considered to be highly emotive in nature. The four elements of natures are translated as geometric glyphs, which are variations of a triangle to keep the representation in its simplest form.
Thank you!
