In Paterna cemetery
Paterna is a village in the Valencia Community (Spain) located 5 kilometres northwest of Valencia and on the left bank of the river Turia.
At the end of Spanish Civil War in 1939 and during the following years thousands of people loyal to Spanish Republic were shot by the fascists in Paterna, most of them in a place known as the Paredón de España. It is estimated that during the repression of Franco’s dictatorship, from 3rd April 1939 to 21st November 1950, 2.237 people were executed by firing squads.
Most of them were buried in mass graves in Paterna cemetery where a memorial to the victims designed by the artist Antonio Miró and the architecter Manolo Vidal was built in 2009.
