Going into this design I spoke to my brother and asked what a prevalent ecological problem in Hawaii was. He told me "Mosquitoes are the main vector for the diseases that are largely responsible for the extinction of Hawaiiian bird species." He went on to say rooting by feral pigs creates breeding grounds for mosquitoes and also a couple of bird species on Kaua'i right now are crashing because of this.
My idea was to capture the birds with a depleting population (I'iwi, Akikiki, and Akekee) in a scene that depicted the richness of the forest, but also an underlying sense of uneasiness and desperation.
The word EXTINCT is subtly hidden in the background to emphasize what's at stake.
In the final image, I have the birds in motion as if to say they've been displaced and these invasive threats have a stranglehold the hierarchy of native species in Hawaii.
