Out of focus - The unbearable depth of field

Fuorifuoco si sviluppa a partire dalla correlazione tra fotografia e realtà, dall’idea che nella nostra percezione quotidiana esista una profondità di campo, e dunque un fuorifuoco, esattamente come nella composizione fotografica.

"Out of focus" is developed from the correlation between photography and reality, from the idea that a depth of field and therefore a focus exist in our perception of the reality as well as in the photographic composition.

Ciò che esce dal contorno o il cui contorno è confuso, in una fotografia o in un film, viene qui evidenziato per far nascere un dubbio, creare un’alternativa, far vedere che una storia diversa è possibile. Fuorifuoco mette in luce il nascosto, inquadra il fuori campo, mostra ciò che non siamo soliti vedere, riguarda l’escluso, il dietro le quinte del mondo, l’invisibile. Diventa quindi nuovamente essenziale l’atto del guardare, inteso come riconoscimento, per riuscire a superare quell’insostenibile profondità di campo che confina l’attenzione su un solo piano.

The things that are out of the frame in a photography or a movie are highlighted to raise a doubt, to create an alternative, to show that a different story is possible. "Out of focus" draws attention to what is hidden, frames the behind the scenes, puts the focus on what we are not used to see, concerns the outcasts, the offstage of the world, the invisible. Again, it becomes essential the act of watching, as an acknowledgement to overcome that unbearable depth of field that limits our attention on the foreground.

L’analisi è composta da una parte scritta e una parte di video intervista che racconta con rispetto e profonda empatia la storia di un individuo, simbolo di molti altri fuorifuoco, di chi vive l’esperienza della precarietà, dell’emarginazione, della strada e indaga le relazioni sociali e intime tra gli invisibili abitanti di una città “fantasma”.

The analysis is made up of a written section and a video interview that tells with respect and deep empathy the story of a person, symbol of many other outcasts, the story of who lives the experience of uncertainty, of marginalisation, of the street and takes a closer look to the social relations between the invisible citizens of the ghost city.

Un fuorifuoco

Il video racconta la storia di un uomo ipovedente nato a Natale. Leandro, assunto dalla FIAT, è stato poi licenziato, ha vissuto un anno per strada ed è il simbolo di uno dei tanti fuorifuoco. Come ha vissuto la città fantasma? Quali sono i luoghi di Torino che fanno da sfondo sfocato alla vicenda?

An Out of Focus

The video tells the story of a partially-sighted man born on Christmas. Leandro worked at the FIAT (an Italian holding company in the automotive industry, succeeded by Fiat Chrysler Automobiles), then he was fired and lived on the street for one year. He is the symbol of one of the many outcast and people who are out of focus for the society. How did he lived in the ghost city? Which are the places of Turin that make the blurry background of the narrative?

Il video inquadra la periferia, intesa come marginalità, come parte di città che spesso non viene messa a fuoco. Il tentativo di portare alla luce realtà che rimangono in secondo piano avviene attraverso riprese dell’uomo che racconta la propria vita, intervallate a riprese della città e a esperimenti di immagini fuori fuoco che rappresentano sia la correlazione tra la fotografia e il nostro modo di guardare gli emarginati della società e sia l’effettivo modo di vedere in fuorifuoco di Leandro.

The video frames the suburbs, as a marginality, as a part of the city that too often is not on focus. The attempt of highlighting realities that usually are left on the background is made through the interview of the man telling his life, shots of the city and experiments of blurry images that represent both the correlation between photography and our way of seeing the social outcasts and Leandro's real manner of seeing blurry.
