Taseo Tea Vessel
:: read your tea ::
After learning about tea traditions around the world, our assignment was to design a tea vessel with a theme. My theme was "fun", and my definition of this word evolved throughout the process. The final product could be marketed as a novelty item and sold in gift shops, possibly with a booklet on tea leaf reading. The clear base has three functions; to measure loose tea, to hold the vessel upright when filled with hot tea, and as a cover when swirling tea leaves before reading.

Rikke Hagen's wobble cognac glass, singing bowls, and tasseography (tea leaf reading).
Rough sketches. Sketched around the theme "fun" and initially set out to design a children's cup. The tilty "top" cup idea with the egg cup style holder stuck. Later, decided an open-top tilty cup for a child would be a disaster. Changed my scope of "fun" and moved beyond children's cups. Tea leaf reading sounded fun, so this was explored next.
Decided the holder can double as a lid. Experimented with various sized cylinders, from 2.5" - 4" diameter to see what was comfortable for getting the last sip out. Did some math to find out what height was necessary for an 8 oz. cup. Wanted the lowest wall of tilted cup to be perpendicular to its resting surface. Tasseography research led me to a light-colored inside for cup, saucer to hold dry tea leaves, and the need for a handle. Eventually went with a 6 oz. size with 3" diameter opening. But first, made some slightly refined sketches for rationale.
Class critique led to the design of a taller lid/base to be casted in clear resin.
Shape of new lid/base was worked out on paper and in yellow foam on a lathe first before SolidWorks renderings were made. Lid/base can be used for dry tea leaves during tea leaf reading. The need for a handle for readings was still there. Professor Chu suggested a dot or logo on the cup to represent handle.
