"Shun"
"Shun" – All of the chosen words end in -tion (which, phonetically, sounds like "shun").
I created a typographic version of a black ink painting (below) by forming text of varying weights, sizes, color, and fonts. The type replaced the ink marks (shown in the images following the ink painting), emphasizing the corresponding areas of movement, texture, and value created by the painting.
…creating an inverted look with a black background resulted in a slightly more intense visual image.
The 3D experiment below was the result of pairing squares of the "Shun" pieces from both the black and white backgrounds. Each pair was chosen based on what worked well together, not by what it was originally next to in the design. From there, the pairs were matched with other pairs, and so on. Once arranged in strips of four pairs, they were folded, making 90 degree angles, and each strip was then staggered. This enabled the final piece to be seen in many different ways, depending on the angle at which the piece was viewed.
