What is Pangea & the concept

EN Pangea, a multicultural festival that focuses on bringing people togerther and giving them a free feeling/safe place for the time being. It’s a popular festival which is held every year at an old airfield in Germany. That’s why all of the communication is in English, to keep it multicultural.

The concept behind Pangea lies with their core values. We started thinking at international level. How will you communicate? How dit people communicate earlier when there was no technology? How was communication kept secret in times of war?

After a long brainstorm session we came with the idea to use Morse codes. We did some research behind Morse codes and we found some files that originated from a head boy scout from 1918. His name is Robbert Baden-Powell and in his time as head boy scout he found it very important that the female scouts had a handbook so that they could learn the field from there. While writing the handbook Robbert made a system for the ladies so they could easily remember those Morse codes. Looking at his system and sketches we decided to let them represent the core values of Pangea ‘international’ and ‘group together’. We will do that by processing the dots and the dashes in the letters.

After these two core values, we had one left. That was industrial. We also tried to take a different approach on this. Looking at industrial, we often see tight, square and a combination of colors that are gray and bright. But you could see this as the 'Old time'. But we see the new industrial style as round, bright in combination with a lot of white space. For example SpaceX from Elon Musk. Looking forward to the space flights over 30 years we see a very modern style, but a new era for the look and feel of this industry.

NL Pangea, een multicultureel festival wat zichzelf richt op het samen brengen van mensen en hun een vrij gevoel geven. Het is een druk bezocht festival wat elk jaar wordt gehouden op een oud vliegveld in Duitsland. Om die reden is dus alle communicatie in het Engels, om het multicultureel te houden.

Het concept achter Pangea ligt bij de kernwaarden. We zijn verder gaan denken bij internationaal. Hoe geef je dat goed weer? Hoe communiceerden mensen vroeger toen er nog geen goede technologie was? Hoe werd er gecommuniceerd in tijden van oorlog om alles zo geheim mogelijk te houden?

Daaruit kwam het idee om voor de stijl morse codes te gaan gebruiken. We gingen daarna dus verder kijken naar morse codes, dit onderzoeken en kwamen uit bij een hoofd-patvinder uit 1918. Zijn naam is Robbert Baden-Powell en in zijn tijd als hoofd-patvinder vond hij het erg belangrijk dat de vrouwlijke patvinders een handboek hadden zodat ze vanuit daar het vak konden leren. Tijdens het schrijven van het handboek bedacht hij een systeem over hoe de dames die morse codes makkelijk konden onthouden. Vanuit dat systeem en de schetsen die hij toen der tijd heeft gemaakt gaan wij de kernwaardes ‘internationaal’ en ‘Group Together’ uitwerken. Dat gaan we doen door de puntjes en de streepjes in de letters te verwerken.

Na deze twee kernwaardes hadden we er nog één over. Dat was industrieel. Wij hebben dit ook weer anders proberen aan te pakken. Kijkend naar industrieel zien wij vaak strak, vierkant en een combinatie van kleuren die grauw en fel zijn. Maar dit zou je kunnen zien als de ‘Oude tijd’. De nieuwe industriele style zien wij als rond, Fel in combinatie met veel wit ruimte. Kijkend naar SpaceX van Elon Musk. Vooruitdenkend naar de ruimtevaart over 30 jaar. Erg modern, maar wel een nieuw tijdperk voor de look en feel van de industrie.
