Extraordinaire is the January 2018 offering for The Font of the Month Club. Members of the club receive a fresh new font at the beginning of every month. For as little as $6/month, it’s a fun and inexpensive way to grow your type library and push yourself to use unusual type in your work.
This typeface is an adjustable hairline sans serif inspired by single-stroke lettering of the Art Deco period, with particular influences from the diamond-shaped forms found in the center of the city of São Paulo, Brazil. I recently visited São Paulo for the amazing Diatipo conference, and thought that these shapes would work perfectly with a multi-layered pin-line shade. The round endings of its strokes gives gives the face a breezy, informal look, and its capitals descend below the baseline so that the small caps appear vertically centered.
Extraordinaire’s variable fonts allow designers to control the weight of the hairline and the distance of the shade. Here’s how you can layer multiple shade distances together to create a variety of dazzling effects.
