PRODUCT / GRAPHIC DESIGN

Project "Spizzimari"
for the course "Design" at the Academy of Fine Arts (Catania, Italy)
with professor Giovanni Levanti, year 2014.

Objective:
Designing a tool or an element of home furnishing to develop skills in the whole process from the idea to the use of the item.

Object:
Ceramic spice keeper (salt, chili and oregano)

Description:
The project consists of a ceramic spice keeper whose shape comes from the beauty and anatomy of the sea urchin and that makes it a natural container.

The structure wants to look like a whole sculpture, solid and at the same time decomposable. Contradictory features that make the object pleasant to discover.

Spizzimari is composed of a square base that gives strength and stability, on which rest three stacked sea urchins. Each of them is designed to contain a spice. The convex forms are enriched by a single succession of points referred to the typical appearance of the sea urchins. These points, together with the tops where spice emerges, are the only elements in which the different colors act as an ornament to the structure, dominated entirely by the whiteness of white.

The ceramic manufacturing realization, made unique by small, pleasant irregularities, allows not to forget the origin.

The features of the sea urchins are proposed with a clear reference to the typical Sicilian cuisine which is special by the freshness of the sea that bathes the region.

Salt, oregano and chili are the spices contained inside, specifically designed to enrich fish delicacies, the “king” product that makes Sicilian land unique.
