Ephemera

In this project we learned about and created ephemera, “the minor transient documents of everyday life.” I found the vintage pieces really interesting and beautiful. I bought a few pieces at the local antique store. It is interesting how much value is put on ephemera and how it becomes a historical artifact that can be analyzed and applied to current issues.
In my ephemera I came up with various concepts, working mainly with combining type and also the use of typography as image to create the form of the piece. I experimented with using handmade type by carving ligatures into a potato to mimic letterpress and the use of audio visual ephemera to create a more conceptual emphemera of a “first” attempt at calligraphic letterforms. I enjoyed the freedom of this project as I was able to create a variety of ephemera, increasing my typographic appreciation and sensitivity.
