琅琊榜 (Nirvana in Fire) is a Chinese historical drama about justice, vengeance, loyalty, and consequences. The story follows Mei Changsu, a pugilist man who comes to the royal capital seeking justice for the 70,000 soldiers who were massacred and branded as traitors 12 years ago. It's based on a novel of the same name.
Consider Rivers
This was inspired by chapter 36 of the novel, which is where Mei Changsu narrates to Xia Dong the circumstances of Nie Duo and Nihuang’s encounter: they meet in the midst of a naval battle.
Words are from Eavan Boland's Anna Liffey, one of my favorite poems. The verse goes:
Consider rivers.
They are always en route to
Their own nothingness. From the first moment
They are going home. And so
When language cannot do it for us,
Cannot make us know love will not diminish us,
There are these phrases
Of the ocean
To console us.
Particular and unafraid of their completion.
