Introduction

For our class Foundation drawing, observation and composition we were asked to do a sketch at Union Station. The assignment asked us to find and choose a spot in the station where we could apply shadows and lights in the sketch. It took me around 2 to 3 days to decide my spot, I thought of the difficulty and effort implicated to acomplish a good work for my portfolio.

Creative Process 

After walking around Union Station and seeing many good spots my head was flooded with possibilities. Before I stared my sketch, I thought, should I chose an easier spot? What are my limits?

In my experience during this class I knew that I should get out of my comfort zone and start betting on more difficult projects. 

I choose a hall between the main hall and the entrance to the bridge. I liked it because it is a zone which most wouldn't consider. In the time when I spent there I did not see anybody looking at the impressiveness in front of them. The shuffled past not realizing this was an area that showed the true character of the station. Here I could discover shadows, light spots and give sense to a part of the station where I personally think people don´t admire at all. 

Workflow

I used one perspective to do the sketch, To connect all the lines to the perspective point and in order not toloose track of the direction of my lines I used a ruler.

Here, at this moment when I finished my sketch, I went to the UPS store and printed my sketch on 3 unique pastel papers. 

I choose the darkest colour, so I could apply more light differentials. The colour aided the drawing by offering a more natural stone shade.

At this moment I was very excited because I could reach a good combination of colours to imitate marble.

At last, this work was a training for my final drawing, I have learnt from so mistakes I made, but overall the outcome was better than I thought.

Conclusion

Finally, this has been my favourite project in class. If I could have done more locations besides the main one I would have enjoyed it even more. In this project I developed better techniques of drawing and a stronger one perspective style.
