California Freemason Magazine Redesign

Project Role:
As the creative editor of California Freemason magazine, I integrated feedback from executive level staff to develop a modular grid allowing for flexibility and variety from one article to the next and adjust layouts for readability for our older audience members. I worked with the outside design agency securing a new contract and revised budget for the project. I facilitated multiple design brainstorms with the design agency in order to clearly communicate the publications new direction, expectations of our executive staff, and overall creative direction and functionality we desired.

Awards:
2016 Ozzie award, Redesigned Table of Contents - Folio: Eddie and Ozzie awards

The table of contents provides a visual representation of the diversity in temporal and topical themes that are employed throughout the issue. A mix of photography, illustrations, and descriptions guide the reader across the spread, providing a visual overview of the articles included throughout the magazine. There are four main entry points for the reader: the runner-up cover and description, referencing the editorial process; a large illustration with architectural elements, which creates intrigue around the article topic; the centralized feature article description in large type with imagery that ties into the cover design; and an archival photo of the fraternity’s first home for children, which signifies a historic approach to the issue’s theme. Following the primary entry points are typographic titles and short descriptions of the articles, which capture readers’ attention and draw them deeper into the issue.
