Hostile design is an urban architectural design trend that restricts people from using public space in a way that they aren’t intended for. This conflicts directly with the homeless community because a lot of these designs are to prevent someone from sleeping, sitting, or living in certain places.
I took a walk around downtown Cincinnati and throughout Over The Rhine to find examples of the hostile design in our city. The images in my series bring awareness to the hostile designs and how they cause the homeless community to feel unwelcome and further away from humanity than they already do. With this project I hope to be a voice for those who are unable to get their voices heard and to open people’s eyes to a realization that the homeless community shouldn’t be treated any less like humans than the upper classes.
