Understanding Japan: Koi in the Matsumoto Castle Pond

Paper Works
A Koi in the Reflection of Matsumoto Castle

There is a town in Nagano Prefecture, Japan, the name of the town is Matsumoto. The most known attractor in the town is an ancient castle of Matsumoto. It is one of three castles in Japan which are not rebuilt or reconstructed. The majority of Japanese castles around the country were destroyed and then restored through years, and only three, Matsumoto, Himeji and Kumamoto Castles remained partly original.
Near the castle there is a pond, which once was a protective dyke. Water in this pond is of beautiful green color and full of big slow koi fish. They wait to be fed, swimming through the reflection of the castle with artless grace.

To make this installation I used paper, glue and acrylic paint. It took me 60 hours to make 550 single pyramids and then assemble them on a piece of green cardstock. It is 54×74 cm in width and in height respectively.
