VERY VERY KUNG FU
Robotics&Animation

Gathering 50 experts from various fields, Very Very KUNG FU combines arts, science, and technology to create an original exhibition based in Taiwan, and is now continually traveling overseas for the exhibition. This project is the opening artwork of the exhibition. With robotic arms, animation, music together, and a mysterious atmosphere, it shows the sense of Eastern culture and leads the audience to the world of Kungfu.

The concept of Eastern martial arts comes from the observation of everything in the world. It contains an observable "bionics" and mysterious "Tao", and the value of it is not on realism but vividness. Based on this, our visual design transforms the metaphysical beauty of martial arts into a dance of music, animation, and space. Not dismantling the martial history or the moves, we invite you to feel the art with heart.

The entire work is not only a deduction of martial art, but also the growing process of martial artists, how they gain the aspects of themselves, and how they see the world.

This show begins with a smoke, diffused into a “circle” representing the spirit of the East, and then separated into "softness and hardness", originated from Classical Chinese philosophy "yin and yang", are opposite and complementary. The relative two strengths are competitive occasionally but they also blend together sometimes as well. The martial artists keep the balance between them, learning how to live beyond the senses, beyond time, and finally managed to merge into energy.

People who practice martial art’s aim is to sublimate to the wonder way of “Very very Kung fu”.The film ended with folded hands gesture presented by the robotics. It symbolizes the end of the work, also a greeting of the beginning of the exhibition.
Music

As the soul of the work, this music does not follow the purely traditional oriental style. Instead, it adopts the opposite elements (yin and yang, hardness and softness, eastern and western) to come to a equilibrium after pulling and colliding, which keeps the point to the exhibition of "Very very Kung fu". Taking this story as the main axis, we combine the traditional oriental musical instruments, synthesizers, and digital sound design to create a new era of martial arts spirit under the inheritance of cultural connotation.

Dealing with the abstract content, we firstly composed the music and established the overall tonality. Along with the computer simulation of robotic arms moving, we create the animation film. Finally, we went to the real machine to set the position and adjust the details. The cooperation of music, video, and robotic arms moving is quite complicated. For example, the robotic arms make the screen rotate in a variety of ways. The monitors on them must be matched with it so that the audience can see the correct view.

The two five-meter-high robotic arms are the focus of the show. Instead of playing a film on the screen only, they provide a 3D perspective with a surprising rotation and moving design, sometimes merge into one big screen, sometimes separate into two. Furthermore, the two robotic arms represent the two human hands. The ending pose (folded hands gesture) is the most obvious part to find this.
