Juxtaposition: Pattern Collection for Fashion Design

Mood Board: A collage of steel construction details, graffiti patterns and vibrant colors to contrast the rigidity of the angles and materials.
Pattern Lineup
This was the first major project for the Introduction to Textiles class at the Savannah College of Art and Design (SCAD) taught by Professor Gemma Marsh.

We were given the following three options of places to find inspiration for process books and textile samples: nature, the animal kingdom, or construction. I chose construction because I wanted to see how I could take something that is often very complicated and clean and change it to be something extremely vivid and simple.

My inspiration started with a foreign construction site that was covered in graffiti and the stark contrast between this art and the structure behind it. From there I explored combining angular shapes with more vibrant colors and even included a few graffiti patterns along with some that are strictly geometric greyscales.

In the lineup I wanted to explore the concept of patterns that somehow related to each other, whether it be in their similar shapes, similar colors, or both of those. I love it when people question why things work, because they somehow do, but somewhat shouldn't. I also wanted to keep a looser, more illustrative style as well with this collection to match with the more urban theme I had throughout the project.
