Anticipation: All Made Up was an entry to a local creative arts competition, which I joined back in December 2011. The theme was inspired by my excitement before going on a trip to Phuket, Thailand less than two weeks after the contest. Apart from my favourite colour pencils and inks, I decided, during the competition, to make use of old, expired makeup from my no longer usable stash of lipsticks, foundations, eye shadows and bottles of nail polish.
The central element of the piece, a woman's face, represents my fascination for the women of Thailand, whom, after hearing stories from family and friends as well as watching world pageants, I believe posess unique beauty. Her colourful hair (rainbow = LGBT pride); and the way her face is turned to the side; represents my intrigue over finding out whether these women are real or artificial.
Traces of what I believed to be part of Thai culture (whimsical houses, an ark, temple-like structures and an elephant) all represent what I looked forward to see during my vacation. The tiger's face reflects the name of the lodging area I planned to stay during my trip. Flowers and bright colours used in the painting represent the magic and romance that I'd heard so much about upon visiting Phuket. Needless to say, I was extremely happy to be going there.
The title of the piece was inspired by both my high expectations for my holiday as well as the use of cosmetic pigments.
