The Filter Bubble: Algorithm to Manipulate Thoughts
Web algorithms of Google and Facebook select information that users want by filtering it based on user's information. This might seem convenient, but it effectively traps people into cultural and idealogical bubble, eventually creating a biased person. People call such phenomenon 'the Filter Bubble'.
This project initiated from the question how designers can solve social problems. The artificial intelligence algorithm, called ‘Algorithm to Manipulate Thoughts’, created a hypothetical conspiracy plan that manipulates human thoughts into the 'Filter Bubble’. The purpose is to raise awareness about the danger of ‘Filter Bubble'.
구글, 페이스북 등의 웹 알고리즘은 사용자의 정보에 기반하여 보고싶어하는 정보를 필터링하여 선별한다. 이는 자칫 편리해 보이지만 효율적으로 문화적, 이념적 거품에 가두어 결국 가치관이 편향된 사람을 만든다. 현 세대에 이러한 현상은 ‘필터 버블’이라 부른다.
이 프로젝트는 디자이너가 사회 문제를 어떻게 해결할 수 있는지에 대한 의문에서 출발하였다. ‘생각 조종자들’이라는 인공지능 알고리즘이 인간의 생각을 조종하기 위한 발단 때문에 ‘필터 버블’ 현상이 나타났다는 가상의 음모론적 기획을 하였고, 이를 통해 ’필터 버블’의 위험성에 대한 문제제기를 하여 경각심을 주는 목적을 가진다.

The 'Filter Bubble Test' shows the tendency of spectators in an extremely simple way, by selecting simple sentences. This indicates the filtered results of user's information that actual filter bubble collected.
'필터 버블 테스트'는 관람자의 성향을 간단한 문장의 선택으로 판단해 극단적으로 보여준다. 이는 실제 필터버블이 사용자의 정보를 모아 검색 결과를 필터링하는 것을 나타낸 것이다.

This poster visualized the disappearance of information on the internet by filter bubble. The concept of design was inspired by the color and shape of the web test pattern. It also emphasized the risk of filter bubble by the phrase 'what the internet is hiding from you'.
필터 버블을 통해 인터넷에서 정보가 필터링 되며 사라지는 모습을 시각화 했다. 디자인 컨셉은 웹 테스트 패턴의 색과 모양에서 영감을 받았으며 ‘what the internet is hiding from you’라는 문구를 통해 필터 버블의 위험성을 강조한다.

I made some images of the process, from the birth of search engines to the simulations of algorithms. The story was created to show the growth of the algorithms in six steps: BIRTH, INFORMATION, COMPREHENSION, DEVELOPMENT, CONTROL, HIDDEN INFORMATION, OUT - OUT.
