Thread of Lore
India is rich with numerous of Religious, linguistic and art traditions.
As a graphic designer, I enjoy exploring the diverse range of artistic expressions across the country. One of which is east Indian embroidery tradition of Kutch - Gujarat. Primarily, This artistic tradition of Kutch is called “Kutch work” or “Kutch Embroidery”due to a wide range of embroidery and textile design techniques within.
This embroidery tradition is practiced normally by women on fabrics of cotton,
in the form of a net using cotton or silk threads. The types of stitches adopted are square chain,
double buttonhole, pattern darning, running stitch, satin and straight stitches.
Inspired by the wide range of traditional graphic patterns and motifs of the Kutch embroidery, I have designed a self initiated typeface project. I had explored various patterns and motifs to understand the possibility of technical consistency and expansion. I have selected the square chain motif due its identical essence.
This is an attempt to understand the tradition i have seen all my life and to bring it to something that i love to do. It's like bringing my past to my present.
