These animated shorts are part of a rich media experience with its interactive characters Ali, Moza, Yas and Sara guiding the visitors through six distinct zones: Drinking, Eating, Enjoying, Moving, Building and Future City. The visitors are each presented a personalised 'Eco Tag' which they can swipe over the terminals of many interactive elements to unlock more experiences and track their progress.
Except the sound design by Jon Oakley and the preliminary character design work carried out by Action Impact, I designed and created all of the the production material, animated and post-produced the complete project by myself. The project was a challenge of setting the best production scope available within tight constraints of time and labour by developing efficient methods.
I began work on the project by re-designing the characters delivered to me for animation production first, then moved on to design the movement style along limited animation techniques that would yield the best results within the production time available. I used AfterEffects for all animation setup and production which also added the richness to the animation by mixing smooth keyframes, puppet animation and conventional techniques.
The environments and characters were all created as vector drawings in Illustrator. This modular approach made it possible to plug-in the client changes to follow within the same setup, even during later stages of animation production. Then I prepared storyboards using this material and finally put them together in animatic videos over the final voiceover recorded at that stage. This made it possible for the clients to visualise the flow of their script and the resulting rough edit in a fashion similar to larger animation studios' pre-production conventions.
Bulk of the scenes and character movements were blocked out with the first stage of final production. Finer details of animation were added while characters were lip synced using a set of 10 head shapes per character during the second stage to follow.
The project was finalised and post-produced in AfterEffects with the finished sound design by Jon Oakley laid over.
