This trio freestyle piece on hoarding of the HIVE along the Kingsland Road was commissioned by ReSpace Projects to raise awareness about their work in the public eye through the visual language & gorilla advertisement of street art, (hence the stencil of the logo used in top right hand corner above artists Samers botanical bird.) Another intention for the mural was to give something back to the public, whilst leaving them something to remember the incredible 2 and a half years of HIVE Dalston and their use of the space for social good before being redeveloped into luxury apartments. The Hive - Human Interest Versatile Environment (http://hivedalston.wordpress.com/) Was an independent, not-4-profit, self-funded, volunteer-led social and cultural hub set up by ReSpace Projects. (http://respaceprojects.org/) Pioneering a holistic approach to city regeneration through the re-use of empty buildings and re-cycling of wasted skills & resources. ReSpace are social change incubators and creative idea facilitators.. The original concept & composition for this mural was to have a mighty flock of exotic birds undulating in flight out from the doors of the hive and pouring out into the front garden, spreading across the front hoarding conveying tools & bits of wood ect in their beaks suggesting the notion of migration, all trailing in a stream of morganic flow lines finally wired up to a Jones (the low-tec cyber dolphin from the film johnny mnemonic!) We had to scrap that synopsis soon as we found out the entrance was to finally be boarded up as well, wich meant the nucleus of the mural i.e. the opening of the doors to the migrating birds wouldn’t of been visible to the public. Finally the Subpattern_LDN collaboration curated by Morgan Davy consisting of artists Samer & Frankie Strand was loosely based and started out on on the theory of resistance that ‘nature will never stumble, and concrete will always crumble.’ Then as the magic came into play and began to take shape, Morgan & Curtis wanted to play on the abstract concept, Inspired by the buddhist proverb of ‘As above as below’ by inverting how we perceive landscapes & environments, flying fish with botanical butterfly fins blowing bubbles out of water into skys where the tide rolls in & draws out, swimming birds with botanical feathers soaring through skys of ocean landscapes where the moon sets in day & the sun rises at night ect.. The Hoarding for this mural collaboration is scheduled to remain for roughly another seven months, and permitted by the landlord from investland who gave the lease to the HIVE. Read Less
