“The Wall”
Design installation entry for
Tirana Design Week's
“EMPOWERING INCLUSIVITY” Competition.

"In the framework of Tirana Design Weeks 2017 “Design for an Inclusive Future”, we are glad to announce the lunch of the design competition “EMPOWERING INCLUSIVITY”. In the framework of this year’s topic of TDW2017 we are challenging all designers, architects, engineers, planners to propose designs that empower, advance, and include those groups of citizens that are often overlooked from the design process. These include but are in no way limited only to citizens with disabilities and the aging population. In today’s society more than 1 billion people have to live with some sort of disability in their life. As this figure includes a good chuck of the world population, one of the challenges of the future in design is already laid out in front of us. We are asking all participants to turn this challenge and this year’s competition personal. We are asking all of you to think of your own fathers, mothers, siblings, aunts, friends and family. Your ideas should focus on helping and empowering the lives and relations of all those people who need a more inclusive society and future" - TDW brief.
As written in the English dictionary anxiety is described as “ a state of intense apprehension or worry often accompanied by physical symptoms such as shaking, intense feelings in the gut, etc, common in mental illness or after a very distressing experience.”

Even though the real causes of anxiety are uncertain, some factors include psychological stress, genetics and STIGMA, where 2 out of 3 people suffering refuse medication because of it.

While some of us suffer from this illness, many of subconsciously (or not) cause it.

The installation consists of a structure around 4m tall and 5.5m wide, of the word “ANXIETY”. The low-spaced characters create the idea of a wall which symbolizes the everyday challenge.

Like the word itself, the installation cannot be completed without the character “I” as i for “me”.  The empty “I” will allow citizens to be part of the installation by letting them “feel” the frustration of
suffering from anxiety.

Me, for everyone who suffers the mental illness. Me, for every person who needs to be aware and fight for it.
The poster is composed of a base of torn out paper, strong colors and contrasts as to represent the struggle and demand attention for the cause.
(all the statistics shown were gathered by the World Heal Organisation's website)
The final stage of the installation is to put citizens in front of the “wall” by raising awareness of the
mental illness, as only by knowing and understanding it we may be able to help raise the stigma around
it and urge people to seek medication for it.

STOP THE STIGMA, CURE ANXIETY!
THANK YOU!
