URBANISTYK Type & Book

Typeface: URBANISTYK

URBANISTYK is a typeface that represents the concrete world we surround ourselves with. In order to create a typeface with dimensions I started sketching stairs and slopes that from at least one perspective form a letter. These forms worked best in a system of monospace blocks. After designing the structure of each letter on paper, I carved these out of the individual blocks of concrete and took pictures of them. Using the frontal images of each letter as a base, the final vector font's characters are made up of perspective lines that give a three-dimensional impression.

As part of the project I created a fontbook consisting of two parts (A and B) that start at the two sides of the booklet and are different both in material and content. Side A features some of the closeup images of the concrete font. During the photo shoot I also focused on capturing the three-dimensional aspect of the individual letters. My aim was to invite the viewer to step into the characters’ space. Side B is about the design process, a "behind the scenes" part of the booklet printed on a darker paper.
