Among the ancient places of importance to the Aztecs is Mexico’s Teotihuacan. Despite the fact that this ancient city existed before the Aztecs’ time, it held significance because they thought the gods had created the universe at this ancient city, which was inhabited for approximately 1,000 years starting around 200 BCE. At its height, Teotihuacan had a population of around 200,000.

Located approximately 50 miles north of Mexico City, Teotihuacan consists of a nearly 1.5-mile avenue named the Avenue of the Dead and two major pyramids, the Pyramid of the Sun and the Pyramid of the Moon. Visitors can climb 200 feet to the top of the Pyramid of the Sun and view the extent of this ancient city, which also includes the Palace of Quetzalpapalotl and the Temple of Quetzalcoatl.
