The Cotton Chair
by Isaac Hughes
The Cotton Chair project was an attempt to create a new sustainable material that can be used in the manufacture of seating parts.
By combining a bio-resin with pulled and carded fibres, extracted from old fabrics, a composite material was created for use in the seating elements. The cotton seating parts are supported by a simple wire frame.
Textile waste that has been reduced to its fibrous foundations is combined with a bio-resin and mixed in to a workable pulp ready for pressing in a mould. Once the pulp has cured the seating elements are removed from their moulds and attached to a simple wire frame.
The Cotton Chair helps divert textile waste from landfill, whilst utilising a material that can be discarded without causing damage to the environment.
