The Bolshoi Drama Theatre
Art Direction, Graphic & Web Design
Tovstonogov Russian State Academic Bolshoi Drama Theatre (literally — Tovstonogov Great Drama Theatre), formerly known as Gorky Bolshoi Drama Theatre (1931–1992), often referred to as the Bolshoi Drama Theatre and by the acronym BDT, is a theatre in Saint Petersburg, that is considered one of the best Russian theatres. The theatre is named after its long-time director Georgy Tovstonogov. Since 2013, Andrey Moguchy is the artistic director of the theatre.
In this project the goal was to update the brand identity and completely refresh the digital experience for the BDT theatre website, develop a new and refined art direction and visual designs that will reflect more immersive, unique and modern experience of the theatre's spirit.
Through the refined and thoughtful typography work, careful historic research and analytic work on the logotype, it became possible to shape the new look and feel, which is partially based on the well recognized, original heritage, what the theatre's identity looked like a decades ago, yet with a modern and contemporary twist. The color choice and the whole palette combines the color of the theatre building's walls, elements of the interior design, and also adds some mysterious dark accents, that represent the dramatic, intriguing moments when the lights goes down in the theatre hall.
In 2017 and 2018 the Bolshoi Drama Theatre is celebrating its 100th jubilee season.
This project is fully dedicated to that memorable event.
