Harpsichord Metallic Howl: Or How to Talk about Labor
Named for a sound poem by the Baroness Elsa von Freytag-Loringhoven, a Dada artist who is rumored to be the real artist behind The Fountain, this piece is an assemblage over over 2,000 gold safety pins. Begun from the meditative process of knitting together the pins, the piece ultimately became a garment or armour of sorts with its precariously closed pins and heavy weight. The form is dictated by the rectilinear nature of the pins, with a few moments of asymmetrical assemblages that add discord to the orderly piece.
After recording the sounds made by the safety pins, I asked classmates to transliterate them and composed a Dada-esque sound poem.
