Oregon and Washington have committed to environmental preservation, with the result that these states offer some of the most spectacular unspoiled beaches in the country. Washington’s Olympic National Park contains several stunning beaches, including Ruby Beach, Rialto Beach, and Shi Shi Beach, which offer picturesque walks amid dramatic, jagged-rock coastlines.

Shi Shi Beach, in particular, is known for Point of Arches, a stretch of sea stacks, or layered rock formations, that can nurture tidal pools and a variety of marine life. Haystack Rock on Oregon’s Cannon Beach is a sea stack that rises more than 200 feet off the level sands and serves as a protected nesting place for puffins and other seabirds.

Beachcombers can also enjoy a 4-mile hike from the rock to Hug Point, where a roadway was blasted into the rock with dynamite to permit driving during high tides in the 1920s. An added benefit of beach walking in the Pacific Northwest is the likelihood, in the right season, of catching a glimpse of whales, dolphins, and other marine mammals.
