As you can guess by the title, this shoot is all about the seventies vibes. The main seventies element is the very earthy colour palette, which came out in the coat and choice of beach huts! This shoot I have to say, was very much improvisation (I will explain later) but I'm pretty happy with how it turned out.
Alice (also known as the queen of textiles check out her instagram) kindly agreed to be my model for this shoot and boy was she easy to work with. Being a model is a hell of a lot harder than it looks and its very easy to look stiff and awkward (lucky for me a lot of my friends are good at acting natural), this was the first time I had worked with Alice and she was so good! We got through two rolls of film easily, with both of us equally coming up with shot poses and bouncing ideas off each other.
For this look I based it all around this absolutely, incredibly, insanely gorgeous coat! Can you tell I'm really into this coat? It's a genuine retro Jaeger coat, which belonged to Alice's mum when she was younger and now belongs to Alice. I've seen her wearing it around college loads and I'm just a little bit jealous of it. To go with it I picked up this lovely pair of trousers in Zara with a super cool burgundy stripe down the leg. I'm really into the 'Suiting' trend this season and couldn't resist this pair, especially with their contrasting 70's athletic wear style stripe. I also went for a Gucci esc slogan t-shirt from New Look which says 'Comme Ci Comme Ca' on it, as I just love how the colours of the shirt contrast that of the trousers. This style of 'retro Gucci' slogan shirt is really popular at the moment and adds to the retro vibes of the outfit! To finish the look off I used a pair of mules which I got earlier this year in an Office store in London. They are an absolute killer on the feet but so worth it because they are ridiculously gorgeous! Beauty is pain am I right? I thought the black brings the whole outfit together nicely without detracting from the main attraction... the coat! Personally this is the type of outfit I could wear and feel really cool and confident but also pretty comfy in (forgetting the shoes).
The location for this shoot was the sticking point... Originally I was planning to shoot in a laundrette (I know how glamorous!) on google maps it had pictures of these really cool vibrant yellow washing machines inside. But when I went to scout it out, it turned out to be really unexciting, non inspiring and well, how you would imagine a laundrette to look really. No yellow washing machines in sight! So onto plan B. Next I decided to choose a record store, which I know well, situated in Boscombe Arcade. In my head I was imagining cool shots including the arcade architecture and Alice flicking through vinyls. Alas I made an amateur mistake in not checking opening times until the Sunday morning of the shoot, turns out the whole arcade in closed on Sundays... So, finally, plan C! Hengistbry Head was the location I used in the end and I think the other locations being a flop was fate because Hengistbry turned out to be really inspiring and a great space for the shoot with loads of props. The weather was lovely and sunny as well which just made it all so much better.
The nostalgic element to this shoot was not only in the styling but in the location as well. Personally it gives me nostalgia of summers spent on the beach throughout my life, and I think if you live by the coast too, this is a nostalgia you can very much relate to. The expressions and poses Alice is doing in the photographs have this playful childlike quality to them which gives it that childhood summer feel.
Thanks to Alice for being an incredible model! Hope you like the photos as much as I do!
