Song Poster - Wave of Mutilation by the Pixies

Wave of Mutilation
by The Pixies

This project involved taking a song of our choosing and creating a poster based upon the song which included original graphics, a timeline, and body copy. I chose a favorite song of mine by the Pixies titled "Wave of Mutilation"

After doing research I learned that the song had a much darker connotation than I had realized. It was written about a cultural phenomena in which Japanese businessmen would drive their cars off of docks with their entire family in the car with them after their business went under.

I tried to incorporate a Japanese style throughout the poster after discovering the meaning behind the song. In traditional Japanese prints the artist would sign their name with a red rectangle stamped with their name such as the one in the poster below. The chop in this poster translates to the song artist "The Pixies"

The wave you see in the poster was decided to be surf green because The Pixies' sound was partially rooted in surf music and this particular song is about riding a giant wave. I felt a sketchy interpretation of the iconic Great Wave, a rising sun, and surf green would harken to both The Pixies and Japanese print.

Give The Pixies a listen if you haven't, here is the song that was referenced in this poster.
